As part of the Social Communication Action Plan, the government is offering young Portuguese between the ages of 15 and 18 the chance to subscribe to a digital newspaper for free.
The measure comes into force in February and will benefit more than 400,000 students.
The newspapers to be subscribed to must be of a national, general or business nature, and the right to a free subscription lasts for two years.
The aim of this measure is to promote media literacy, combat disinformation and establish press reading habits among young people.
Access to this service will be through the gov.pt portal and will require a citizen card or a digital mobile key.
