Highlights of the bYou Congress

On the 7th and 8th of February it was held the bYou Congress Children, young people and media: (dis)connected lives? The event was attended by a wide audience including researchers, teachers, undergraduate and postgraduate students. The congress marks the end of the bYou project: Study on children and young people’s experiences and expressions of the media, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

The opening session was a debate on the participation of children and young people in a hyperconnected world. The presentations by student Ana Beatriz Pereira from Escola Secundária Vitorino Nemésio, and lawyer and researcher João Marecos, contributed to fostering and deepening the discussions conducted in the thematic sessions.

The first plenary session was dedicated to the presentation of results of the bYou project by the coordinators Sara Pereira and Daniel Brandão, with comments from experts Teresa Calçada and Manuel Sarmento.

On the second day of the event, in addition to the thematic sessions, a collective Media Arts installation was presented with artistic interpretations inspired by the bYou Mural. The two plenary sessions held in the afternoon were dedicated to school media as a form of expression and participation, and the relationship between children, young people and the media.

The closing session was led by José Miguel Braga with an engaging and poetic text about the two days of debate.

A manifesto was also presented (and it will be available soon).
