The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the British data protection regulator, fined the social network Tiktok €14.4 million for the misuse of personal data of users under the age of 13.
The ICO estimates that around 1.4 million children under the age of 13 used the platform in 2020, even though account creation at these ages is not allowed. As for the use of data, the British data protection law states that at these ages it is only possible with parental consent.
Last March, the British Government had banned the installation of TikTok on professional mobile phones, citing security issues.
